Sei-Ki is presence and authenticity in touch. “Knowing” in Sei-Ki comes through the training of observation\, attention and the willingness to engage with the reality of life movement with an empty mind. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are benefits to both receiver and practitioner in Sei-Ki \nThose who receive Sei-Ki often experience that they feel more like “themselves” and have a better sense of what they want – this can relate to small things\, but over time also to big issues in life\, such as work or relationships. As the body-mind wakes up and becomes more sensitive\, life is experienced more immediately\, more intensely and with more pleasure. \nPractitioners experience something similar when they practise Sei-Ki with discipline and commitment: a greater connection to reality and quality in our work which continues into wider aspects of our lives. \nWe experience growth in wisdom and an understanding of clients from the roots of actually seeing how it is for them rather than relying on theory and maps. \n\n\n\n\n\nSei-Ki – echo of original Shiatsu \nFounded by Akinobu Kishi\, Sei-Ki has had a major influence on Western Shiatsu since the early 1980s. Kishi trained in Shiatsu during its Golden Age in Japan and Sei-ki is an expression of the evolution of Japanese Shiatsu\, as well as a return to its origins. Sei-Ki also refers to a body culture and health philosophy practiced in Japanese traditions and arts that could not be found anywhere else. SUMMARY:Sei-Ki: Reaching Out | Touching Life | Zürich
DESCRIPTION:A three day workshop near Zurich\, Switzerland\, with Alice Whieldon MA PhD. This workshop is open to people new to Sei-Ki as well as those who have some experience.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSei-Ki is the work of Kishi Akinobu. It could be described as the ‘esoteric’ aspect of Shiatsu\, or The Way of Touch. \n\n\n\n\nA Way\, in Japanese culture\, is a path to reality through a specific medium. There are a number of recognised Ways\, including the Way of Tea\, the Way of Martial Arts\, the Way of Flower arranging. They are formal arts or practices that are focused on a prescribed activity\, yet the ultimate goal is not so much to learn that activity\, as to achieve satori or liberation through its mastery. \n\n\n\nAlthough there are a limited number of recognised Ways\, the understanding of practice as Way runs throughout Japanese culture. So Kishi would say that Sei-Ki is a Way in this cultural sense. The form it takes is to ‘touch’ or ‘meet through touch’. \n\n\n\nKishi was steeped in Shiatsu\, having studied at Namikoshi’s\, Japan Shiatsu School\, before becoming Masunaga’s principal disciple for 10 years. At the end of this period\, in 1980\, his personal realisation and satori emerged through his hands as ‘Sei-Ki’. \n\n\n\nThis 3-day workshop is perfect for newcomers to get a ‘taste’ of this work and for existing students looking for inspiration and experience. Alice will introduce Sei-Ki through demonstration\, discussion and practice. In the second half\, there will be an opportunity for individual direction in a tutorial-style setting\, within the workshop. This will include an invitation to work on Alice or her assistant for personalised feedback and direction within a class or small group context. Even those who prefer not to take up the offer gain considerable insight and learning from observation of this focused teaching. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning aims:\n\n\n\nNewcomers to Sei-Ki will come away with a basic understanding of what Sei-Ki is and how it fits in the story of Shiatsu. For students with prior experience\, this is a chance to deepen your understanding. Students will experience the qualities of Sei-Ki touch and be guided in introducing these qualities in their own touch work for personal or professional development. \n\n\n\nTeaching approach:\n\n\n\nDemonstration is crucial to picking up the ‘feel’\, qualities and basic form of Sei-Ki through active observation and\, where possible\, experiencing the direct touch of the instructor or assistant. \n\n\n\nPractice is central to learning Sei-Ki. Guidance in the form of kata (exercises) will be given\, as well as time to freely explore. There will be plenty of space for students to practice and experience this approach with the benefit of gentle supervision. \n\n\n\nDiscussion in the form of Q&A sessions and short talks to help students understand core principles in Sei-Ki\, such as: the nature of ‘help’; right timing; right place; right distance. \n\n\n\nTutorial Monday\n\n\n\nAlice will be offering tutorials to a limited number of 4 students on the Monday following the workshop\, from 0900-1300. Of course\, what I call Japanese grammar is not the grammar of the Japanese language. \n\nIt is the grammar of the traditional Japanese body.We call it Seitai. \n\nIn the last century\, the way we perceive our bodies and the way we use our bodies has changed drastically due to the massive inflow of modern-Western civilisation and the change in our lifestyles. And today we cannot understand how our grandparents lived\, as if they lived in another culture. \nThen\, why am I trying to teach it in Europe?I believe that learning a different way of understanding our bodies can enrich us. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeitai\n\n\n\nEven though we call ourselves “Seitai Kyokai” or Seitai Association\, word Seitai itself is a common noun in Japanese. Sometimes it is used as a translational word for chiropractic technique. But I use word “Seitai” here as a system started by Haruchika Noguchi\, the founder of the Seitai Kyokai. Some of his books are translated into English and from 1970’s his philosophy and practices have been introduced to Europe by some pioneers who were direct students of Haruchika Noguchi. Katsugen Undo and Yuki are the main practices to express Noguchi’s philosophy. Through those people\, Seitai has been spread out in Europe. \nHaruchika Sensei died in 1976. His sons and his disciples succeeded his work. I myself have come to know of Seitai in 1977 after his death. So I had no opportunity to meet Haruchika Sensei in person. I belong to the second generation in Seitai. My teacher is Hiroyuki Noguchi\, the second son of Haruchika Sensei.  \n\n\n\n\n\nAfter Haruchika Sensei\, Hiroyuki Sensei was in charge of most of the lectures and seminars for the members of the Seitai Kyokai. After ten years of teaching\, he decided to start a new school within the Seitai Kyokai. In 1988\, Shintai Kyoiku Kenkyusho was founded. It literally means ‘Body Education Research Institute’. We still do not have an exact translation for this organisation. Because the word Shintai cannot simply be translated as “body”\, although every dictionary suggests using “body” as an appropriate translation.  \nWhat Hiroyuki Sensei has been trying to do with this school is to elucidate the practices of Haruchika Sensei and how to pass them on to the next generation. He came to realize that people who lived a century ago and people today perceive the body differently. A practice called Doho was developed to replicate the way our ancestors perceived the body. This is why I call my work “teaching Japanese grammar”. The introduction of Doho will be one of the main exercises in the workshops. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSo what is the body?\nOur bodies are the results of our interaction with the environment. You eat food that is not you. You digest it and it becomes you. You meet other people and interact with them.You digest what you experience and it becomes you.You never stay the same. You are constantly renewing yourself.This process is what we call learning and this is what we call life. \nHaruchika Sensei’s “Colds and Their Benefits” is the book written about the process of learning. \nDon’t we have a very manipulative relationship with our bodies? Aren’t you trying to control your body with your will?What we call the body is an area that your will cannot reach.Your body is not your property and perhaps you have never met it. So we need to learn what bodies are and how we can relate to them \nHow can we relate to others?How can we relate to our own bodies? \nIn Seitai\, the first question is how to touch others.The answer to this question will be extended to how we relate to others. Others means not only people\, but also society and the environment around us. \n\n\n\n\nThis is why practicing Doho is needed. \nTo relate to others in a non-manipulative way is the way to meet others. We are so used to relating to others in a manipulative way.As long as we keep our habit of manipulation\, we cannot meet others. \n\nDoho is the word composed of “movement” 動 and “theory” 法.And this Doho introduces you to the world of “kata”.The literal meaning of kata is “form”. But it expresses a state of not-me\, or a state where there is no will to manipulate others. \n\nTouching others in a non-manipulative way with the help of Kata will be the starting point of learning Seitai and it will also be the goal of Seitai. \n\nWhat happens next?This will be the theme of the workshop. \n\n\n\nIt is quite difficult to explain what we are doing with Seitai in the English language\, which always requires the subject “I” or “you”. You always have to add “my” or “your” before the word body. \n\n\n\nMy ambition in this workshop is to shake up the world of solid “I” you live in. \n\n\n\nKazuhiro Sunami \n\n\n\n\n\n角南和宏Kazuhiro Sunami \n\n\n\nis a renowned teacher and member of the Shintai Kyoiku Kenkyusho (Body Education Research Institute) in Japan. \n\n\n\nHe has been practicing Seitai for almost 40 years and has been teaching Seitai since 1998. It is your chance to fully immerse yourself in Sei-Ki\, The Way of Touch with focus\, camaraderie and joy.\n\n\n\nAkinobu Kishi\, the founder of Sei-Ki\, used to share his work in residential settings every year. These events offered an opportunity for more intense immersion and fostered an international community.Alice and Alexandra brought the Sei-Ki Residential back as “Sei-Ki on the Edge” in 2024 and are building on that success in 2025. It will be an expertly presented event bringing all the focus\, community and journeying of the originals. \n\n\n\nA residential workshop is so much more than the sum of its parts. We swim in the Sei-ki atmosphere without dissipating it through contact with the outside world. This helps subvert the idea that it is simply a technique for health and it embeds Sei-Ki as a way of life. \n\n\n\nSei-Ki on the Edge 2025 is open to everybody who has attended at least one Sei-Ki workshop with Alice or Alexandra.
